Chizivano Shava Champions Water Harvesting and Climate-Smart Agriculture in Mwenezi’s Drought-Prone Landscapes

In Mwenezi, a drought-prone district in Zimbabwe, unpredictable rainfall and declining agricultural productivity have challenged the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Climate change exacerbates these difficulties, rendering traditional farming methods increasingly unreliable. Amid these challenges, Chizivano Shava—a leading farmer and pioneer in climate resilience—has embraced innovation as a vital pathway to sustainable agriculture.

Supported by the Government of Zimbabwe, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Climate Resilient Livelihoods (CRL) project equips vulnerable farming communities with tools and knowledge to adapt to shifting environmental conditions. This initiative especially targets women farmers, recognising their central role in agriculture and food security.

Chizivano Shava’s approach centres on smart water harvesting technologies that capture and store rainwater efficiently during sporadic rains. Techniques such as contour trenches, earth dams, and rooftop rainwater collection have helped secure reliable water sources for crops and livestock throughout dry spells.

Alongside water management, climate-smart agricultural practices are deeply integrated. These include diversifying crops with drought-tolerant varieties, applying conservation agriculture principles like minimal tillage and mulching, and adopting agroforestry models that enhance soil health while providing additional income sources.

This holistic approach has begun to turn the tide for farming families in Mwenezi. Crop yields are stabilising despite adverse weather, incomes are improving, and food security is strengthening. Women, empowered through training and access to resources, play a leading role in disseminating these innovations within their communities.

FFA Explainer Box: Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA)
CSA refers to farming methods that increase productivity and resilience to climate change while reducing greenhouse gas emissions where possible.

The government’s commitment through CRL aligns with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), promoting sustainable rural development and climate adaptation. By supporting grassroots innovation, the project also engages youth, fostering rural employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Chizivano reflects on the transformation: “Adapting to climate change is not easy, but with the right knowledge and tools, our community is regaining hope. Water harvesting and smart farming save our crops and improve our lives.”

As climate challenges persist, stories like Chizivano Shava’s signal a promising future for Zimbabwean agriculture—one where resilience, innovation, and inclusivity pave the way toward sustainable rural livelihoods and food security.
