Gokwe Milk Business Centre: Transforming a Cooperative Dairy Hub with a Business Mindset

Established in 1994 as a cooperative, the Gokwe Milk Business Centre has been a vital part of the local dairy community, currently comprising 22 members who collectively supply about 240 litres of milk daily. While the number of milking cows stands at 33, the centre previously recorded peak production of up to 700 litres per day, demonstrating its impressive growth potential.

From milk collection to diversified dairy products

Traditionally serving as a collection centre, the Gokwe facility has evolved to cater directly to market demand by offering fresh milk for sale. It also processes fresh milk into pasteurised products, enhancing product safety, shelf-life, and value addition. Many farmers complement centre sales by selling fresh milk directly from their homes, maintaining vital income streams at the grassroots level.

Focus on feed and animal nutrition

To optimise milk yields and herd health, the association encourages farmers to prepare their own supplementary feeds, particularly silage, using their existing tractor, truck, and forage cutter. This hands-on approach to feed self-sufficiency ensures cows receive balanced nutrition outside grazing, an essential strategy for boosting dairy productivity in semi-arid regions like Gokwe.

Stepping up with value addition and record keeping

Recognising the benefits of a business-oriented approach, members were guided to expand product lines through processing fresh milk into yoghurt and ice cream, broadening market appeal. Equally important has been emphasis on proper record keeping, equipping farmers and centre managers with critical data to inform decision-making and measure progress.

Rebranding and upgrading the centre

During a recent visit by the District Agricultural Extension Officer (DAEO), Mr Gumindoga, and his team, it was agreed to relabel the cooperative as the “Gokwe Milk Business Centre.” This reflects a strategic shift towards adopting a commercial mindset and scaling up operations to tap into emerging market opportunities.

Lessons for Zimbabwe’s dairy sector

The Gokwe Milk Business Centre exemplifies how traditional cooperatives can transition into dynamic business hubs that propel rural economies. By prioritising value addition, feed management, and sound record keeping, the centre aligns with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) goals on agricultural diversification and youth empowerment.

This model offers inspiration for dairy cooperatives nationwide seeking to enhance resilience, increase incomes, and create sustainable jobs in the livestock sector.

Conclusion

The Gokwe Milk Business Centre’s evolution highlights the power of capacity-building, strategic support, and farmer collaboration to drive dairy industry transformation. With adequate investment and continued extension services, such ventures can unlock significant socio-economic benefits for communities across Zimbabwe.
