UZ Agro Industrial Park Showcases Agri-Tech And Education 5.0 Driving Food Security In Zimbabwe

The University of Zimbabwe’s Agro-Industrial Park (UZAIP) stands as a beacon of innovation, underscoring the transformative power of agri-tech and the Education 5.0 philosophy in strengthening national food security. Spearheaded by Dr Joseph Gusha, Director of UZAIP, the project embodies a bold vision where education extends beyond traditional classrooms to directly impact soil, factories, markets, and ultimately, Zimbabwean households.

Born out of the University of Zimbabwe’s Research, Innovation and Industrialization Directorate, UZAIP centralises innovation hubs, incubation centres, and industrial facilities under one roof. This integrative approach fosters the commercialisation of academic research, facilitating the creation of real products, vibrant industries, and sustainable jobs that echo the aspirations of Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

The park boasts three pivotal industrial plants: oil extraction and refining, bread and confectionery production, and stock-feed manufacturing, all inaugurated by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa. These facilities exemplify robust value chain development in Zimbabwe’s rural sectors, accelerating agricultural industrialisation while creating new economic opportunities for communities.

At the core of the park lies a high-capacity soybean oil refinery, capable of processing 30 tonnes daily — yielding approximately 4,000 litres of cooking oil branded as “New Gold Cooking Oil,” alongside valuable by-products such as soya cake for protein-rich stock feed, and soap stock for detergent manufacturing. UZAIP’s strategic partnership with over 2,500 farmers in 2025 integrates bio-fertilisers produced at its Innovation Hub, employing rhizobia inoculants to enhance soil fertility and significantly boost soybean yields. This symbiotic relationship fortifies agronomic productivity and exemplifies rural industrialisation aligned with NDS1 goals.

Perhaps most remarkable is the park’s NutriLove bread initiative, representing nutrition-sensitive agriculture through a highly nutritious loaf made from orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP). Rich in iron, vitamin C, and carotenoids, NutriLove not only addresses hidden hunger but also fuels market growth with accompanying OFSP sugar buns and pies, collectively produced at a plant capable of churning out 20,000 loaves daily.

The stock-feed sector anchors UZAIP’s integrated poultry system, with an annual production capacity of 120,000 tonnes of stock feed supporting 105,000 climate-controlled broiler birds per growth cycle. Driven by rising consumer demand, the poultry enterprise tripled its bird production to 396,000 in 2025, planning further expansion through a forthcoming hatchery and an abattoir designed to slaughter 1,500 birds per hour. The soon-to-be-launched Nu Gold branded whole chickens will symbolise a homegrown, university-led poultry processing triumph, poised to populate supermarkets nationwide.

UZAIP’s farming ambit extends beyond poultry into cattle and piggery, with over 600 cattle yielding approximately 40 tonnes of beef annually, and pig production exceeding 20 tonnes. On the cropping front, the 2024/25 season harvested a staggering 1,838 tonnes of maize, a fivefold increase in yields per hectare, alongside improved soybean and wheat production. The park’s milling facility processes cereals into Nu Gold Roller Meal and Super Refined Roller Meal, providing quality staples to the market.

This comprehensive agro-industrial operation not only reduces Zimbabwe’s reliance on food imports but also generates employment opportunities, fostering inclusive rural development that benefits women, youth, and children—key demographic groups highlighted by NDS1.

Importantly, UZAIP doubles as a dynamic, living classroom. Students across disciplines—including agriculture, veterinary sciences, engineering, business, and economics—rotate through practical attachments, engaging directly with industrial operations, managing production cycles, and conducting applied research. This experiential learning paradigm equips graduates with market-relevant skills that empower them to drive Zimbabwe’s agricultural transformation.

The University’s 2025 performance metrics are impressive: maize yields surged from 0.94 to 5.74 tonnes per hectare; soybean yields quadrupled; refined oil and bread production grew by 45% and 78% respectively; and agro-processing revenue increased by 21% in US dollar terms. Livestock numbers and sales have risen dramatically, accompanied by infrastructure investments including soybean extruders and expanded broiler housing. The park’s market presence strengthened via outlets such as VN Mini Mart and through accolades received at the 2025 ZAS Show, where UZ was honoured for its champion steer.

Collaboration with key sector stakeholders amplifies UZAIP’s impact. Joint initiatives with Mimosa Mining Company, AU-IBAR, and Coopers have trained over 200 farmers in districts like Mberengwa and Zvishavane, equipping 60 lead farmers as community livestock extension workers. This outreach fosters knowledge transfer and uplifts rural livelihoods, solidifying the park’s role as a vital catalyst in national food security.

Ambitiously, UZAIP’s 2026 agenda plans to expand product innovations, scale livestock and feed projects nationwide, and extend out-grower schemes to benefit an additional 2,500 households. Notable objectives include a 50% increase in NutriLove production, launching new poultry and piggery units, planting over 590 hectares of maize, soy, and sugar beans, and the operational launch of an abattoir and hatchery.

The University of Zimbabwe Agro-Industrial Park exemplifies the tangible realisation of Zimbabwe’s agricultural industrialisation strategy by integrating cutting-edge research with practical enterprise. Dr Gusha’s vision of Education 5.0 — where learning transcends theory to become entrepreneurial action — is a powerful model for the continent’s universities. Through innovation, collaboration, and strategic growth, UZAIP is driving national development, food security, and economic empowerment, proving that education can indeed change lives and transform nations.
